The Sweet Sounds of Harmony

May 06, 2014
By Perry R. Banse, Assistant Superintendent, Middle/High School Principal

One of the outstanding pieces of our Fine Arts department is the area of vocal music. Under the direction of Rhonda Farver in the middle school / high school and Jennifer Kinsey in the elementary school, our singers have been wowing audiences and winning awards for years.

This past Friday, the Kid’s Choir from elementary was able to perform at EPCOT. The elementary Kid’s Choir has done a number of concerts at assisted living facilities as well as a nice Christmas program. On Monday, May 12th the K-5 grades will be doing a spring musical called, “Spend a While on the Nile.” You won’t want to miss this very special event that begins at 7:00pm in the worship center. The Kid’s Choir will wrap up its performances for the year with a May 15th performance at the Barrington Assisted Living Facility.

The High School Show Choir, Ladies Ensemble, three voice soloists, and one piano soloist from IRCS performed April 12th in Jacksonville at a State FVA competition.  In order to qualify for this State competition, all of these groups and individuals had to compete at the local FVA district level earlier in the year and receive superior ratings.  All of these participants also received Superior ratings at the Jacksonville State competition and the Ladies Ensemble, soloist Elizabeth Toney, and piano soloist Jasmin Yu were all invited to perform at the Honors Concert after the competition.  The Ladies Chorus performed in Lakeland this past week at the State FVA competition.  The group received “Excellent” ratings for its performance.

The middle school chorus attended the Music USA competition this past week at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. Along with the performance at the competition; those students had to suffer through a day at Universal and a day at Islands of Adventure. During the competition they took care of business. They received a superior rating, won first place in the middle school division, and were named Overall Grand Champions for the entire competition.

There are still a couple of opportunities to hear our award winning MS and HS performers in the last few weeks of school. On Saturday, May 10th, IRCS will be hosting its first ever Senior Showcase. This is an opportunity for our graduating seniors to perform something of their choice for friends and family to see. It will be a great night that begins at 7:30 in the Fellowship Center. The spring concert for the MS/HS choruses and bands will be Tuesday, May 13th at 7:00pm in the Worship Center. As always, the HS chorus and Regiment will each be doing one number at our graduation ceremony. Graduation will be Friday, May 23rd at 7:00pm in the Worship Center. There is no cost for admission to any of these events

All of these events require a huge time commitment from the directors, so a big thank you goes out to Rhonda Farver and Jennifer Kinsey for all of the hard work and effort they have poured into our choral department to make them exceptional.
