Athletics At The Next Level

January 19, 2016
By Perry R. Banse, Assistant Superintendent, Middle/High School Principal

At Indian Rocks Christian School we have had the opportunity to experience successes in a number of areas from academics (an MIT acceptance) to graduates that go on to full-time ministry positions (see the board outside the MS/HS office). One of our particularly strong areas comes from our athletic department. This can be clearly seen by the number of athletes that go on to participate at the college or university level after their experience here.

  • Baseball - 22
  • Football – 21
  • Cross Country / Track – 15
  • Women’s Basketball – 13
  • Volleyball – 11
  • Cheerleading – 9
  • Swimming – 5
  • Women’s Soccer – 4
  • Men’s Basketball – 4
  • Golf – 2
  • Bowling – 1
  • Men’s Soccer – 1
  • Softball – 1
  • Tennis – 1
  • Wrestling – 1

This adds up to 111 IRCS alumni going on to play college or university sports. While some of these were “walk-ons” the majority of them received scholarship money. Through the Class of 2015, IRCS has handed 1028 graduates their diploma. So over the last 21 years a little over 10% or approximately 1 out of every 10 grads have gone on to the next level. But if we focus on just the last 3 years, we have had 178 graduates and 31 have gone on to play college sports. This jumps the number up to over 17% or about 1 out of every 6 grads involved in athletics at the next level. Not too shabby for a little school from Largo.

Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award. Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. Last year IRCS tied for 6th place in the state in the 3A Private School division. This was the highest ranking for any school from Pinellas County in any of the divisions, public or private. Way to go Eagles!
