Meet Our New Teachers

September 07, 2016
By Perry R. Banse, Assistant Superintendent, Middle/High School Principal

This school year at Indian Rocks Christian School, we’re excited to be growing our family of faculty! In addition to Anita George who will be teaching Health and P.E., we are welcoming four new teachers into our classrooms for the 2016-17 school year. We invite you to get to know them and how they’ll be serving students and families this year.

Meet Sarah Giddings
5th Grade Teacher

Sarah Giddings will be replacing Mrs. Servo as a fifth grade teacher this year. When asked what sparked her love of teaching, she focused on discipleship. “I love discipling children spiritually, developmentally, and academically. My passion for discipleship is what prompted me to become a teacher,” she said.

Miss Giddings is excited to be part of a school that integrates faith with studies. “Teaching in a Christian school is a privilege….I value the openness [it] provides,” she said.

When asked what she’s most looking forward to this school year, she said bonding with her students and watching the growth they accomplish in all aspects of their lives.

Here are some other fun facts about Miss Giddings:

  • Favorite subject: Math
  • Favorite author: Dee Henderson
  • Favorite activities: playing games with family and friends and relaxing with her golden retriever

A word of advice from Miss Giddings to her students:

“Learn how to become a self-regulated learner. This is someone who knows how he learns and how to pursue understanding independently and with guidance.”

Meet Karen Johnson
5th Grade Teacher

Karen Johnson will also be teaching fifth grade, replacing Mrs. Vogel. This will be her 29th year of teaching, and she says she has enjoyed working with kids and knew she wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember.

Mrs. Johnson recently moved to the area from Pennsylvania, feeling God’s call was leading her to teach at IRCS. “It was a leap of faith, and [I’m] so happy to be here,” she said.

She’s looking forward to serving students and their families this year and can’t wait to get to know her students better.

Fun Facts about Mrs. Johnson:

  • Favorite subject: English
  • Most valued skill: the ability to communicate and connect with students
  • Favorite activity: reading on the beach

A word of advice from Mrs. Johnson to families considering placing their children at IRCS:

“I would highly recommend IRCS. I have a daughter in middle school here and she loves it! The teachers are helpful and supportive.”

Meet Allison Mitchell
Elementary and High School Spanish Teacher

Allison Mitchell and her husband moved their lives from Tennessee to Florida to be able to teach at IRCS! Allison will be our new Spanish teacher, working with elementary students in the afternoons and high school students in the mornings.

“Through much prayer and pretty amazing circumstances, I believe the Lord brought us [here],” says Mrs. Mitchell. “We may not know for some time why [He] led us here, but [I’m] anxious to jump in, serve, and be a part of the IRCS family.”

Mrs. Mitchell says her faith in Jesus Christ not only helps her feel love and compassion toward her students, but it also helps her stay focused on the bigger picture. “They may not speak another word of Spanish when they leave my class, but if they go on to love and serve the Lord, I am happy for them. That is the greater choice.”

Check out these other fun facts about Mrs. Mitchell:

  • Most looking forward to this year: attending school sporting events
  • Favorite book: A Woman After God’s Own Heart by Elizabeth George
  • Most exciting endeavor: currently working on scuba diver certification

A word of advice from Mrs. Mitchell to her students:

“Keep the main thing, the main thing. Never stop learning.”

Meet David Mitchell

Instruction Technology Specialist, Elementary School Teacher

David Mitchell will be taking on a new role for us here at IRCS: Instruction Technology Specialist for elementary school students. He’ll also be replacing Mr. Mayes, working with students in the computer lab.

Previously, he taught fifth graders for 13 years, seven of those teaching strictly social studies. He also coached middle school football for 10 years, experiencing two county championships and one undefeated season!

When asked how his faith influences the way he teaches, he said, “I truly believe God gifts people with certain abilities and talents to be used to glorify Him. I trust God to equip me with the words to use in the classroom to be able to connect with my students.”

More fun facts about Mr. Mitchell:

  • Most looking forward to this school year: incorporating technology into lessons
  • Favorite book: anything by Tom Clancy
  • Hobbies: fishing, camping, and hiking

A word from Mr. Mitchell to prospective families:

“Even though I’m new to the area, IRCS feels like home. Everyone here from the teachers to the administration is friendly and caring. They’re more concerned with the students’ Christian welfare than the test scores.”

Anita George also joins the IRCS team, teaching middle school and high school health and physical education.
