Reading Rocks - Summer 2010 Reading Program

Elementary School

Exercise your mind with reading. IRCS, together with Get Fitness, want to encourage elementary students to keep their minds in shape through the summer with Reading Rocks. Yes, summertime is time for vacation, it is also a great opportunity to keep their minds sharp simply by reading on a regular basis.

Getting students to read can be a challenge. To help parents motivate students, IRCS will award a certificate of completion and grant a special dress down day pass for all participants that meet their established goal. Those students will also be entered into a drawing where the grand prize will be a brand new bicycle, provided by Get Fitness and Indian Rocks Beach Cycles.

You will find that IRCS has provided a Recommended Reading List for each grade level (see link to the left). Complete the Reading Rocks Tracking form and return it to school by the first Friday of the school year.

Goals for Students Going Into...

  • Kindergarten  20 Books (read to by parent)
  • 1st Grade  20 Books (student and/or parent reading together)
  • 2nd Grade* 200 pages (student and/or parent reading together)
  • 3rd Grade*  300 pages (read by student)
  • 4th Grade*  400 pages (read by student)
  • 5th Grade*  500 pages (read by student)

*Students in grades 2-5 begin the school year reading an Accelerated Reader (AR) book. That book is identified on the Recommended Reading list. It would be adventageous for your child to read the AR book right before school begins.

Special Thanks to Shawn Tash and Get Fitness located at 13845 Walsingham Rd, Largo, for donating a bicycle through Indian Rocks Beach Cycles.
