4 Reasons Students Need a Safe Space to Grow Spiritually

There’s a lot of talk these days about school safety, and that’s an important topic! But safety isn’t limited to the physical and emotional realms. A safe spiritual space is essential for kids growing up in a world that doesn’t generally promote biblical values.

Kids need a safe and nurturing environment in which to understand who God is, what the Bible says, and what that means for them as they grow into adulthood.

Consider how students benefit from having a safe environment to grow in Christ.

1. It’s a Place Where Kids Can Safely Ask Tough Questions

Many kids who enroll at a Christian school come from families that already embrace faith in Christ and try to model biblical values. Others come from families who are still learning about Christ, but who recognize the value of a Christ-centered education. But regardless of a student’s family background, each student needs to decide on his or her own whether they are ready to embrace the message of the gospel and live a life that reflects that commitment.

Students at a Christian school can feel safe asking the tough questions about God, faith, and the Bible. They need to be able to express their doubts, and they need caring Christian teachers who respond calmly and thoughtfully to the questions they raise. A failure to address students’ hard questions can lead to young adults who are just going through the motions or, worse yet, who abandon their faith in college.

2. It’s a Place Where Kids Can Be Vulnerable

Students need a place where it’s safe to express problems and relational issues. Ideally, Christian school teachers serve as godly role models who will get to know their students, demonstrate sincere care and concern, and be ready to deal with the messy situations of life. Another benefit of a Christian school is that teachers have the freedom to pray with a student and point them to biblical answers to life’s problems.

3. It’s a Place Where Kids Can Experience Love and Forgiveness

Let’s get real: we all make mistakes! Students need a place where it’s safe to admit mistakes and where they can seek forgiveness, experience reconciliation, and find restoration. When kids see that happen on an interpersonal level, it reinforces the greater reality of the grace, forgiveness, and new life they can experience through Christ.

4. It’s a Place Where Kids Can Walk the Walk

Just as plants need the optimal input of light and nutrients to thrive, growing Christian kids need to develop the habits of studying God’s Word, prayer, worship, and serving others to thrive in their faith. A Christian school with an intentional mission and biblical values will create faith-nurturing experiences throughout the school week and as part of every academic content area.
