IRCS 2020 Fall Athletic Preview

2020 has certainly been filled with challenges for all of us. From being quarantined and locked down to preparing for the start of another school year. After several long meetings, the much anticipated decision about school sports finally was released. WE ARE ON! LET’S PLAY BALL. The Fall season has taken a hit as far as getting started late and paring down schedules, but it has started and we are excited to get things rolling.

VOLLEYBALL – Under the leadership of Head Coach Mark Foster, JV Coach Kim Foster and MS Coach Alex Buchanan we were able to have tryouts and select the girls who will represent IRCS on the volleyball court this year. It was a very tough decision for the MS team because there were so many girls who wanted a shot at making the team. They all have to get ready quickly as their games start right away. With a lot of hard work and dedication we will see a successful volleyball season this year.

GOLF – Coach Battaglia had a tough job going into this year because he had several returning players from last year.  However, the late start to the season along with some restrictions on team sizes have made things even tougher.  He conducted his tryouts and pared the numbers down to 7 guys.  We also are fielding a 1 girl, female golf team!  They practice at Largo Municipal Course and play their home matches there. They too, have an abbreviated schedule but have enough to be prepared for the District Tournament in October.

SWIMMING – The swim team really took a hit this year, we are only allowed 16 swimmers at the pool.  Coach Cashel Mack has spent the past couple years building up the numbers, we find ourselves having to make cuts and keeping only the best of the group. We have 8 girls and 8 guys for the team this year.  They practice at the SW Rec Pool. Hopefully it will only be a one year restriction and we will be able to pick up next year with building the program again.

BOWLING – Coach Frost finds that he has to have tryouts and make cuts every year so it is not new to him. This year he has 7 girls and 7 boys to work with and build into District Competitors. They practice and play home matches at Liberty Lanes.

CROSS COUNTRY – Coach Bobby LaBrant finds himself with a large number of runners this year. His boys team is currently listed as # 3 in the state. We have about 50 total runners out for cross country this year with the boys outnumbering the girls 2 to 1. There are some serious runners in this year’s group hoping to make a run at that state title.

FOOTBALL – This is the 2nd year for Coach Spate and he has added some quality personnel to his coaching staff. They will certainly be helpful in moving the program forward. We are dressing about 23 varsity players this year as we continue to rebuild. However, the future looks bright because we have about 35 MS players.  Keep those number up for the next couple years and we will begin to see our teams become more productive.

I want to encourage everyone to purchase Sports Passes so we can cut down on handling money at the gate. Sports Passes are still $50 per person and are good for admittance to ALL home contests regardless of the sport. They can be purchased online, in the school office or at the game. It’s a great bargain and a great way to motivate yourself to come and cheer on our teams.
